BIOGRAPHY -- ALLEN MICHAEL SUSSMAN, M.D.

ALLEN MICHAEL SUSSMAN is a Board Certified Endocrinologist affiliated with the Southlake Clinic in Renton, Washington.  He has had an active endocrinology and internal medicine practice in the Renton area since 1979, focusing primarily on diabetes and thyroid disorders.  His keen interest in research was sparked through several unique opportunities as an undergraduate at Brown University.  Later, during a fellowship at the University of Washington, Dr. Sussman discovered a satisfying balance between research and clinical practice which he continues to this day.  As an expert in his field, Dr. Sussman has been called upon to serve as a consultant for legal matters, businesses and pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Sussman has been active in education throughout his professional life.  He was an instructor in the Family Practice Residency Program at Valley Medical Center, and later became a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine.  For the past three years, Dr. Sussman has enjoyed teaching Healers Arts, a course designed to facilitate medical students in their quest to develop healthy and meaningful relationships with patients and colleagues.  He has served as an advisor, facilitator and project developer for various programs related to diabetes, obesity, and alternative medicine.  In addition, Dr. Sussman has served in several leadership positions at Valley Medical Center, the Washington State Diabetes Association, and Washington State programs related to complementary/alternative medicine services.  He is a strong advocate of a humanistic physician-patient relationship, and incorporates alternative medicine and meditation into his clinical practice.

Dr. Sussman was born in New York City, and attended Brown University and New York Medical College.  In 1977, he moved to the Northwest to complete an Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Washington and has remained in this area ever since.  He and his wife, Melanie Wroe, have two sons and live on Mercer Island.  He enjoys golf, bridge, theater, hiking, travel, and the continued pursuit of personal growth through the practice of meditation.

RAINIER CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER was founded in 1991 by Drs. Ronald Brazg, Leslie Klaff and Allen Sussman.  The Center conducts studies on new pharmaceutical agents not yet approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), focusing primarily on drugs related to diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.  Agents used for pain, depression, and pulmonary conditions have also been tested, along with innovative medical devices used in treatment of diabetes.
